Invaluable books and media
01/25/10 at 23:24:39

Hi everyone,

I hope this topic hasn't been explored and I just haven't stumbled on it yet.  I was wondering if I could get you more experienced clock makers to list specific books or media that are invaluable for the clock maker (not necessarily on repair). Please try not to say "any book by..."  Also if you could include a short reason for your admiration.  Also, any book you think is critical for relatively new clock makers to read would be appreciated.

There is no one book that will teach you everything. Read books by many different authors . Each author  as well as each clockmaker will have their own methods and techniques that come with experience.
Most of us learn the theory and the mathematics in the beginning . In the day to day business of clock repair theory  is not a factor.
Practical Clock Repair by Donald Ce Carle is a good book . In it you will find theory and math and of course repair.
In my opinion no one has done more to help and instruct clockmakers from the beginner to the seasoned pro  than Mr. Conover. I started reading his work in the early 1980's. I have a large selection of clock books . Everything from collector price guides to most every repair book on the market.
When you get ready for repair this is the place to be.

Donald de Carle is an excellent book, a little outdated on some of the material or tools, but actually any older method with older tools is keeping in line with the way the clock was created. Another good book is The Clock Repairer's handbook by Laurie Penman. He has a very good description and illustrations for beginners and experienced repairer's.
Interesting, they are both from across the pond.

Ditto to all the above - Penman's also got a book on clock making (I'm too lazy to go down to my shop to look at the name - sorry) which has some good information in it.

Books I'd add to those mentioned in the above posts:
1) The Modern Clock by Ward L. Goodrich
This is the first book my great-uncle made me read when I began my apprenticeship with him in the "olden times". Great information on escapements.

2) Horolovar's 400 Day Clock Repair Guide by Charles Terwilliger
Really a must have if you decide to deal with these clocks. The backplate illustrations are invaluable.

3) Watch and Clock Making and Repairing by W.J. Gazeley
This is (in my slightly biased opinion) just plain fun to read. Lot's of pictures and descriptions of how things were done and some interesting tool set up's. It appeals to the luddite in me somehow.

4) Watch and Clock Information Please! by W.H. Samelius
The first horological book I purchased with my own money as a 14 year old! This book mainly consists of Mr. Samelius' monthly column in the American Horologist and Jeweler magazine. Really quite good information.

Cheers.

Building an American Clock Movement by Steven Conover is an excellent book to read if you want to build a movement from scratch. I have no formal training, I build the movement and it works perfect. The book is well laid out and easy for a first time project.
